First things first….Mike McConville is a superstar!

Mike’s the Club Administrator – he does lots of things in the background to make sure that we can field the right number of teams when required, and this week he was stretched to the limit.

In preparing for this day we thought we had three teams playing in the Cup. We thought we had arranged a ‘Gala Day’ extravaganza to celebrate the occasion. We thought we were organised….until things began to slowly unravel with less than a week to go.

It turned out we had four teams playing cup ties, so needed four match times. We made a revised schedule hoping our opponents would be able to be just a little flexible with match start times, but of course they weren’t, so we ended up in two separate venues with club resources being stretched to the absolute limit – but thanks to Mike McConville we pulled it off.

We won 3 of the 4 encounters and whoop-whoop for that!

First up were the Boys from Su II playing against Bellshill Cardinal who were disguised as Volero. We played well considering we were down to a bare 6 players, and Libero Stuart Mackenzie played his first official match as a passer hitter. We lost 3 – 0 but competed consistently and supported each other.

Match 2 saw the City Boys win 3 – 2 against a spirited Bon Accord. We were never behind in the match, but didn’t manage to dominate the proceedings. However we had 4 teenagers on the court – the future looks bright, and the quality of the present won this match!

Meanwhile, miles away in a separate venue the Fabulous Suettes destroyed local rivals NLVC. Our girls had too much firepower, too much energy, too much ball control…..just too much. Their desire was irresistible and the 3 – 0 score line did not flatter our efforts.

The final match saw the Baby Suettes take on Beacon Phoenix from Aberdeen – it was another 3 – 0 score line, with the Suettes never letting the visitors get into the match.

It seems the start times didn’t really have much of an influence on the matches after all…….

So well done Mike for pulling it all together at desperately short notice. We will keep the gala day extravaganza arrangements for another home tie date, and well done to all of our players, supporters and officials for staying calm through the-week-that-was!
